Chapter Summary
What Happens
Albert's father takes Joey to an army officer, Captain Nicholls, and sells him for forty pounds. Joey is not scared at first, but becomes terrified when he realises he is being taken away from Albert. Albert arrives and tries to join the army so he can stay with Joey, but the officer refuses as Albert is too young. Nicholls promises Albert that he will take care of Joey.
