Chapter Summary
What Happens
The ambulance work that Topthorn and Joey do is gruelling, but they receive huge praise and affection from the German soldiers. They are generously cared for by Emilie and her grandfather as winter closes in. One day Emilie fails to appear — she has caught pneumonia. By the end of the chapter, she has recovered.
